What is AP Studio Art? For those seeking expression of the arts in a level tailored to the students, AP Studio Art welcomes students to use any medium to emphasize one’s personal statement, or the topic of what your artwork is about. The prompt for this personal statement is created by the student in the beginning of the class to be the main focus over the next two semesters. Creating multiple pieces as the year progresses, students are given feedback from the instructor, Mr. Schultz. He provides a different perspective for the students to see from. The materials can be brought in from home or provided by the teacher. The class also includes videos to help with ideas and inspiration. The pieces of work related to the prompt the student chooses will be set up as a portfolio by the end of the year for one’s AP exam. Although it is possible to finish early, the class is often used to maintain a steady completion rate, though creativity holds no limit. The students of AP Studio Art at VAAS are given a warm up, or quick sketch assignment, as a short prompt for the students. The purpose of these sketches is to build on a skill for your art pieces. For example, should the mastery be composition, the quick sketches are to practice aligning objects for the composition of your canvas of your canvas. The class has a total of 15 pieces you will submit to the College Board. The entire portfolio is built from sketches or experiments students created. Any progression is fully embraced in this regard. As a student from this year’s class, Light Ramirez had the opportunity to practice perspective and be able to seek feedback. “AP Art is an environment that surrounds me with advanced creativity, providing me a space to feel free to explore new techniques of art,” stated Light. This course, although a higher level art class than most, is without a doubt an artist’s playground. It encourages them to reach for their highest potential in their interest. They sense their voices being heard in a different way and are enabled to harness mastery in design. All it takes is a starting point and layout of what message to send out using their creativity in this class. |
