On December 6th and 7th, softball tryouts were held on the VAAS PE field after school by Coach Cruz. The first day of tryouts mainly consisted of fielding drills (handling the ball while playing in the field, playing defense) and getting new players comfortable with using their gloves. Coach Cruz’ goal for tryouts “was to give new and returning students [who were] interested in joining softball the chance to tryout to make the team.” When asked about her thoughts of last season, Coach Cruz said, “Last season was the first Softball season coming back since before the pandemic, so we were dealing with a lot of unknowns. It was very different from any of the past seasons I’ve coached, but we were able to succeed with very little preparation and all the precautions we had to take.” Though last season had its challenges, Coach Cruz has new goals for the 2023 season. “My goal for this upcoming season is to have a well-rounded team that works well together and has the same vision on the field. I think with the mix of returning and new players, we can use our past and new experiences to make that possible. Team cohesion is important to succeed and be victorious.” by Lee Boch and Vanessa Duenas
